Discussion: Content, the Meat of Your Website

Content is the most important aspect of your Web pages. You could have the worst-looking site on the Web, but if the content is important enough, people will suffer through it. Conversely, you could have the best-designed Web site in the universe, but if there is no reason for the audience to go there, they won't.

Rationale

These rules are based on standard industry practice and on proven communication models. The rules are flexible enough for most situations to help Web designers think about how to present their content. Each situation will have its own unique challenges.

Principles

Review this list of rules. You'll want to read them carefully to see what you think they mean. Try to think of a specific example for each rule as you view the list. The next section gives you reasons for the rules and some specific examples.

  •   Audience has been clearly defined
  •   Content has been written or modified to audience
  •   Content has been organized for lists, bullets, and chunks
